The ITU EnJustice collaborators (Vasilis Galis and David Struthers) joined part of the Lund University team (Ida Nafstad) and another colleague in Nuuk in October to attend the 18th Polar Law Symposium. We participated in a discussion titled “Decolonial Sociology of Law in a Nordic Context roundtable.”
A rich conversation with those attending the panel drawing out what exactly a decolonial approach to law entails in distinct colonial contexts left us with new ideas and directions for our research. We discussed the complex historical and current relationships between Denmark and the Kalaallit Nunaat government. Discussion also focused on the relationships within local communities and then between local communities and the formal governance and legal forms of the autonomous territory.
We also spent time doing fieldwork in and around Nuuk. We were fortunate to connect with several people to conduct interviews and continue to build connections in the local community.
